Nothing gained by living in the past.

We should have no regrets… The past is finished. There is nothing to be gained by going over it. Whatever it gave us in the experiences it brought us was something we had to know.

– Rebecca Beard

When I saw this quote this morning I thought perfect! I preach this all the time and feel this way very much so. The past is the past and we can’t go back and change it unless we are Michael J Fox with a Delorian so why dredge it up or live in it?

“We should have no regrets” that is says a lot right there! No regrets we can’t go through life saying we should have done this, should have done that etc… we can’t always be second guessing things after they happen. We can’t have regrets as when we regret choices then we drive ourselves crazy living in the past and trying to change things we can’t change. As it says “the past is finished”. So move on and let the past be the past and look to the here and now. Learn from the past but don’t live in it.

“There is nothing to be gained by going over it” Once something is over it’s over nothing can be gained by hashing it out over and over. Now of course in the world of sports and as an endurance athlete I do reflect back on a race for a moment think about what went right and what went wrong quickly learn from it and then move on and forget about it. I have seen too many athletes live in the past either dredging up some great race they had thinking they should be able to recreate it again or should be able to take that one performance and run their calculators and say I should be running my race this fast now. Not true. Or dredging up a poor performance and saying if I would have done this, if I had done this the outcome would have been better. Maybe? But maybe not? So it’s done it’s over and nothing to be gained by living in the past. Look to the future look to how you feel on that given day and move on and go with current real time data not past data.

“Whatever it gave us in the experiences it brought us something we had to know”
And that sums up the past. We learn from the past, we make ourselves better from the past and things we learned along the way. But we don’t live in the past and continue to dredge up the past and go over events of the past over and over thinking we can change the outcome. The outcome has been marked it’s done and life moves forward.

Overall as you move forward you need to live in the here and now you need to think about embracing the moment you are in. not living in the past and not living in the future. The past was great and we can have many great memories, maybe some bad memories but that’s what they are memories nothing to relive and nothing to repeatedly go over. They were moments that taught us some lessons and we hopefully grew from those and now can be wiser as the here and now happens. Life is short and we never know when our day is coming so I always say once it’s done it’s done and we move on and enjoy what is right in front of us and we do it with no regrets.

Happy Monday!!
Cheers

2 weeks from today hopefully I can say I am an Ironman. Sunday Nov. 18th is my big race day my debut Ironman distance Triathlon. I’m in taper mode right now so Sunday was a full day of rest. I slept in today for extra sleep and later today my workout will be 60 minute bike followed by a 6-7 mile run.
The taper is one and my excitement level is building!
